Foyet and Wagner Emerge as New Director Candidate for 'Leaving Europe for Immigration'

Coach Gus Foyet and David Wagner have emerged as candidates for the new head coach of Korean soccer.

According to the Korea Football Association, Lee Im-saeng, technical director, departed for Europe on Tuesday. Lee Im-saeng, technical director, has taken over the appointment of a national team coach due to the sudden resignation of Jeong Hae-sung, chairman of the National Team's Strengthening Committee.

The candidates Lee Im-saeng will meet are Gus Foyet and David Wagner. Lee Im-saeng will interview Foyet and Wagner there. Foyet had 12 candidates (including domestic coaches), but Wagner is known to have emerged at the 10th meeting of the National Power Reinforcement Committee.
Born in Uruguay, Foyet coached Brighton and Hove Albion, Sunderland (England), AEK Athens (Greece) and Shanghai Shenhua (China). Notably, he played with Ki in the English Premier League during the 2013-2014 season.

He has led the Greek national team from 2022. However, he let go of his contract after failing to advance to the Euro 2024 finals.

Wagner is from Germany, but he is a U.S. national. He started his coaching career at Huddersfield Town in the English Championship (second division) and led the team to promotion, and served as the head coach of Schalke (Germany), Young Voice (Switzerland) and Nority City (second division of England). He has no experience as a national team coach, however.

With domestic coaches such as Ulsan HD coach Hong Myung-bo and coach Kim Do-hoon clearly expressing their intention to refuse, the weight is on as a foreign coach. Graham Arnold, who currently directs the Australian national team along with Foyet and Wagner, where director Lee Im-saeng is conducting an interview there, is also known to be a strong candidate.
